While each individual Neema student has her own story surrounding her life prior to Neema—who she was raised by, how she survived, etc.—they all collectively carry the burden of extreme material poverty. And even though coming to Neema, with adequate food, lodging, clothing, healthcare, etc., has relieved some of that burden personally, they still carry that burden for their families.

They worry about a sick father who can’t provide anymore. They worry about a sister who can’t go to school because of a lack of school fees. They worry about an older child they had to leave at home. These are just a few examples of the many, unique worries our students are burdened with while at Neema.

Fortunately, our team of counselors plays a critical role in helping to alleviate many of these worries so our students can focus on their own personal healing, transformation, and growth. To do this, our counselors often take the time to call and check in on a student’s family or even pay a home visit to ensure personally that everything is well. And doing little things like this helps to lift the weight of the burden so our students can continue on with their lives at Neema a little less worried.

Ruth, a first year student, says, "I feel happy and full of hope. My mom is fairly well and has improved greatly, though not so active. Dad is also improving, and I am so happy because he has changed … the way he treats my mother which has brought peace at home, and it has reduced … my stress level. I almost lost hope, but the continuous encouragement from counseling and the prayers helped me to keep hopeful."
