Urgent Medical Care Provided for Women and Children In Need

Justine (Class of 2026) with her son Sanchez

Many young women face extreme poverty while growing up in rural Kenya. Extreme poverty forces them to drop out of school because they lack school fees which causes them to become vulnerable, often pregnant, and keeps them from accessing basic medical care.

While at Neema, young women (and their children) are provided with essential medical care that would otherwise not be accessible. Transportation to healthcare centers ensures that students and children can visit doctors, undergo imaging and testing, and receive physical therapy when needed.

Every term, a nurse from the local dispensary comes to Neema to conduct workshops focused specifically on women's health issues. These sessions cover topics such as menstrual health, family planning, cancer prevention, and general hygiene, empowering young women with the knowledge and tools to take charge of their well-being.

A local nurse shares with Neema’s students about women’s health issues.

This comprehensive care, combined with better nutrition from fresh fruits and vegetables from our permaculture farm, access to clean water, and emotional and spiritual support, helps transform the lives of the young women at Neema in a holistic manner.

A second-year student shared, “Neema has helped my child in many ways like providing a balanced diet and better nutrition. When I came to Neema, my baby was six months old and she was underweight. The childcare department also noticed that my child had tongue tie. She was taken to the hospital and they did the minor surgery and now she is able to move her tongue freely. Through receiving medical care and a balanced diet, she has improved a lot. She can now run, talk, has an appetite, and her body weight is stable. I thank God.”
