Land Purchase in Waitaluk, Kenya

Date: January 2022

Neema is excited to announce that we recently acquired two acres of land to build our own, brand new campus! We’re thrilled about this progress and the exciting future that it affords to double our impact in the same community.

We will launch a capital campaign later in 2022 to secure funding for Neema’s new campus, which we expect to be completed by the end 2024—right in time to celebrate Neema’s 10-year anniversary.

The goal of our new campus is to double the number of young women we can welcome at Neema and to build more optimal facilities. Notably, we anticipate our campus to include:

  • Residential homes with shared outdoor covered open spaces

  • Classrooms with shared outdoor open space

  • Dedicated children’s area (indoor, outdoor covered, outdoor playground)

  • Large outdoor covered dining area

  • Large community/chapel

  • Dedicated administrative and counseling building

  • Real kitchen with high efficiency wood-burning stoves

  • Sports/recreational area

  • Vegetable garden

  • Dedicated well (borehole) with the possibility to share water with the community

Although construction has not yet begun, we did plant crops—corn and beans (a staple of our students & staff diet), and green vegetables (kale, chards, etc.)— and expect a full harvest this year! And we will also plant fruit trees such as avocados, papayas, mangos, etc., so that they will already be producing when we move in.

We want to thank Stephen Lagat一the son of our current landlord一for the invaluable assistance he provided the Neema Land Search Committee. Through his relationships within the community, Stephen was able to identify land for sale and connect us with the owner. We later engaged the Amani, Wekesa & Associates legal team to assist in the process and to ensure that Neema owns an official land title.
