My Experience Visiting Neema
by Marilyn Silva
I am a travel agent and have been blessed to see many areas of the world. I had never been to Africa, although I had a desire. Well, God decided it was time. From the very first time I heard about Neema I had a burning desire to go. I had never been on a mission trip and was concerned with how I could contribute. When I was told that all that was required was a true interest and compassion for these girls, I knew I could do that. Then when we got there after a long trip from Philadelphia, they sure made it easy! We were met with tons of smiles and hugs.
Throughout the week we joined them for devotions each morning and church on Sunday. In the afternoons we spent time with their children and did activities with the girls such as coloring, puzzles and bracelet making. They were eager to have us watch or join them playing “football,” hula hoop, net ball (basketball without dribbling), and jumping rope. We sang together and had some giggle time too. They attempted to teach me to sew on a manual sewing machine. Unfortunately, my incoordination got the best of me. However, we had so much fun trying. I even got a couple of cooking lessons.
We took a trip to Mt. Elgon National Park with some of the staff. It was wonderful to uncover some of the beauty of Kenya with them (including a rare elephant sighting).
I really enjoyed getting to know the girls, their children, and the marvelous staff! I also feel blessed to get to know Stephen, a local Pastor, and our driver for the time we were there. He was definitely a great tour guide as well.
I have never brought home better souvenirs then the ones made by the women at the Neema Project. Everyone loves them. We marveled at their talent. They even made a wonderful dress for me to take home to my sister with only my guessing which of the students made the best size model. It fit perfectly.
In conclusion, I have never met such gracious, loving, and appreciative people in my life. My heart was bursting the whole time I was there, and it fills up every time I think of my wonderful trip.
