Biblical Training at Neema from the Alpha Course

Neema’s chaplain, Carol

Each year, Rahab Kinyua, a missionary with One Mission Society, teaches the Alpha Discipleship Course to our students, covering the foundations of the Christian faith. The majority of our students have received teachings on the same topics from their churches and schools, but in many cases, the teaching is distorted, not thorough, or unclear.

Mostly it has been misinterpretation of Scripture—not considering the context it was written [or] taking one Scripture out of context. The prosperity gospel has also been overly preached.
— Winnie, Neema's Former Program Director

During this year’s Alpha course, the topic of the Holy Spirit (what does the Holy Spirit do, how to be filled by the Holy Spirit) was a highlight for our students because most of the young women at Neema have not heard this information before. The topic of baptism was then introduced.

First, the various baptisms practiced in the African context were talked about, and then the topic of true biblical baptism was discussed. Most of the young women shared that they had either never been baptized or had been baptized in a way that’s not biblical. Some shared that they had been told baptism is not necessary or that they don’t need to be baptized with water. Most did not understand the role of baptism, so Carol, our chaplain, taught more about it to those who were interested. In July, these young women will be baptized at Faith Community Church where Carol and Winnie fellowship!

Discipleship at Neema:

  • A regular weekday at Neema includes morning prayers and singing, daily worship in song and exhortation from the Scripture, and evening prayers and singing.

  • On Sundays, Neema’s students attend a local church within walking distance. Some of our staff are involved at this church, and our students are involved in ushering, worship, and more.

  • Our chaplain, Carol, usually visits at least twice a month to teach our students. For Guardians’ Day, she comes for an extended time to spiritually invest in our students' parents/guardians since she does not see them as frequently as she sees our students.

Susan

I am very happy that I have a relationship with God through singing and prayer. I did not think I would ever get to know and understand God the way I have at Neema.
— Third year student Susan
